DC interference on ΗEL.PE Pipeline Systems under the Normal (Bipolar) and Emergency (Monopolar) Operation of the Planned VSC-HVDC link between Attica and Crete

Examining the impact of DC interference on a branch of HEL.PE pipeline systems, due to the potential operation of the HVDC link between Attica and Crete. This link is envisaged as VSC-HVDC cable networks that will be using sea electrodes to facilitate the current return process. The examined impact is confined to both, normal (bipolar) and emergency (monopole) operation of the link.

Risk Assessment Tool for the probability to have a severe coating defect on buried gas pipelines, under episodes related to direct lightning strikes

The developed risk assessment tool provides the probability to have a severe coating defect on buried gas pipelines, under episodes related to direct lightning strikes in the adjacent soil. Severe coating defect on the pipeline does not necessarily mean metal wall fusion and gas leakage as a consequence. The risk assessment tool (in its present form) cannot be used to assess the impact on buried pipelines under the incidence of longitudinal induction (i.e. due to lightning strikes on adjacent power lines).

Mitigation Design for the effects of electromagnetic interference on Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) caused by HV AC Traction Systems and HV / MV AC power supply Systems

– Modelling for estimating the AC interference impact under both steady state and fault conditions for ~400km of TAP routing from Kavalla to Albanian borders. [Modelling embraced: a) 38 HV circuits (400kV and 275kV), b) 20kV MV circuits, and c) AC Electrified Traction routings in the nearby vicinity].

– Designing an earthing wire oriented mitigation solution to ensure safety and mechanical integrity of TAP.

Stray Current Corrosion Impact of PV Systems on third party Infrastructure

This project investigates the impact of Photovoltaic oriented DC stray current corrosion on large scale solar farms’ grounding and third-party infrastructure. The DC stray current may result from a fault or facilitated by PV modules and buried cables’ condition that allows DC leakage to flow into the earth. In particular, such abnormal conditions can impact the grounding electrodes of the PV plants as well as third-party metallic infrastructures (e.g. natural gas pipelines) that are laid in the nearby vicinity of a solar plant.
